Trying to sell before prices fall and to buy before they rise.

To profit from market timing an investor must be right twice: when to get out and when to get back in. Selling during a fall and missing the recovery can leave them worse off than doing nothing.

The alternative is to stay invested through the ups and downs with money that will not be needed for years.
