Purchasing power
How much in goods and services a sum of money can buy.
The number on a banknote stays the same; what it buys does not. When prices rise, the purchasing power of the same amount falls: with prices 5% higher, $100 buys what about $95 bought before.
A real return measures the change in purchasing power, not just in the number of dollars.
