Dividend yield

A share's yearly dividend divided by its price, as a percentage.

A share at $80 that pays $2.00 a year has a yield of 2.5%. Because the price is in the calculation, the yield rises when the price falls.

A very high yield often means investors expect the dividend to be cut. The yield is based on past payments, and future ones are not guaranteed.
