Dividend

A part of a company's profit paid out to its shareholders.

A company can keep its profit to grow the business, or pay part of it to its shareholders as a dividend — usually a fixed amount per share, often every quarter. Paying one is a choice, not an obligation: dividends can be cut or stopped, and many growing companies pay none.
