Emergency fund
Cash kept aside, easy to reach, for costs nobody planned.
An emergency fund pays for the things nobody plans — a repair, a medical bill, a month without income — so that you do not have to sell investments at a bad moment. A common rule of thumb is three to six months of essential costs.
It is kept in cash or a deposit you can reach quickly, not in investments whose price moves.
