Index
A single number that tracks the prices of a chosen group of shares.
An index combines the prices of its members into one figure, measured in points, so you can see how the whole group moved. Most large indices weight each company by its market cap, so the biggest companies move them most.
An index is a calculation and cannot be bought, but index funds and ETFs hold its shares and follow it.
