IPO (initial public offering)

The first time a company sells its shares to the public.

In an IPO a private company sells shares to the public for the first time, usually to raise money for growth, and its shares start trading on a stock exchange. After the IPO, most buying and selling is between investors; the company receives money only when it sells new shares.
