Shares outstanding

The total number of a company's shares held by investors, insiders included.

The company reports this number regularly. It rises when the company issues new shares and falls when it buys some of its own back; a split multiplies it.

Multiplied by the share price, it gives the market cap; profit divided by it gives earnings per share.
