Unrealized gain (paper gain)

The gain or loss on what you still hold: today's value minus what you paid.

An unrealized gain exists only on paper. It is the market value of a holding minus its cost basis, and it changes every time the price does — it can shrink, vanish or turn into a loss before you sell.

When you sell, the part you sold becomes a realized gain or loss.
