Asset class
A group of investments that behave in similar ways, such as shares, bonds or cash.
The main asset classes are shares (stocks), bonds, cash and bank deposits, and property; commodities such as gold are sometimes added. Investments in the same class tend to rise and fall for similar reasons, while different classes often behave differently.
How a portfolio is divided among them is its allocation.
