Broker
A licensed firm that buys and sells investments for you and holds them in your account.
Individuals cannot trade on an exchange directly. A broker takes your orders, sends them to an exchange or another trading venue, holds your shares and cash, pays dividends into your account and sends you statements.
Brokers are supervised by a financial regulator, and they charge for their services — through commissions, the spread, currency conversion or account fees.
