Brokerage account

An account at a broker that holds your cash and your investments.

It works like a bank account that can also hold shares, bonds and funds. You pay money in, place orders through it, and see what you own and what it is worth. Dividends and the money from sales arrive in it.

Opening one requires proving who you are. In most regulated markets, the investments in it are kept separate from the broker's own assets.
