Settlement

The last step of a trade, when the money and the shares actually change hands.

A trade is agreed in an instant, but completing it takes a little longer. Settlement is written as T plus a number of business days after the trade date (T). Since May 2024, most US share trades settle on T+1: a trade on Monday settles on Tuesday.

The price is fixed when the trade is matched; settlement only completes the exchange.
